Wanda L. Jones

CLAREMORE — A memorial service for long time Rogers County resident, Wanda L. Jones will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct., 16, at the First United Methodist Church under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Her pastor, Dr. Ray Crawford will officiate. Wanda passed away on Friday, Oct., 5, 2012. She was 80.

Born in Oologah, Okla. on Oct., 2, 1932 to Melvin and Margaret (Gasaway) Harris, Wanda was reared and educated in her birth community, graduating as valedictorian of her class.  During her senior year, she held the record as the lady’s leading basketball scorer in Rogers County.  She also was recognized as the lady’s basketball player of the year.  This community that she loved remained home for 47 years, before she moved to Claremore.

On June 30, 1951 Wanda and Johnny Jones were married in Arkansas and that union was gifted with two sons.  Her family was the recipients of her great cooking skills, something that she had acquired from her grandmother.  Her cinnamon rolls and pies became famous throughout Rogers County.  Her family claims she was not only a blue ribbon cook but also a white glove house keeper.  She made the grandchildren feel special by always having those perfect deviled eggs at family gatherings.

A pillar in the Rogers County community, Wanda worked in the county clerk’s office for 33 years; she retired as Claremore’s first female county clerk.  Quite civic minded, she held precious, her memberships in the Oologah OES for over 50 years, P.E.O. Chapter BM and the Tuesday Study Club.  She also loved the Lord and was faithful in her service to the church, utilizing the gifts God had given her to play the piano and sing in the choir.  Wanda also cherished her church family and the many lifelong friends in the Ester Circle.

A devoted wife and loving grandmother, Wanda always let her family know that they were her priority. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Johnny; sons Mike Jones and wife Amiee, David Jones and wife Melanie all of Oologah; grandchildren, Amber Welch and husband Ryan, Amy Pope and husband Jesse, Kelsey Jones and husband Tommy, Jarod Jones and wife Emily; great grandchildren, Avery, Jackson, Emily, Cash, Brooklyn and Keely; sisters, Pat Pinson and husband Les, Doris Brazeal and husband Jeral; brother, Bob Harris and wife Roberta, and numerous nieces and nephews. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Margaret Harris.

Condolences can also be made by sending a donation in Wanda’s name to the Clarehouse, 7617 S. Mingo Rd., Tulsa, OK 74133 or First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 1615 N. Hwy 88, Claremore, OK 74017.
