James 'Jim' Arlin Heinen

CLAREMORE — A memorial service will celebrate the life of James “Jim” Arlin Heinen at 11 a.m., Sat., June 15, 2013, at Blue Starr church of Christ. Friends may visit at the funeral home 1-7 pm, Thursday June 13, 2013. Jim passed away Sun. June 2, 2013 at the age of 74.

Born Nov. 16, 1938, in Phoenix, Ariz., to Leo G. and Zeda (DeLozier) Heinen, Jim spent his high school years in Tulsa, graduating from Webster High with the class of 1957.

He continued his education by attending OSU, studying engineering.

Before he graduated, Jim enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in multiple locations, including Pensacola, Fla.; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Japan. He served on the USS Kitty Hawk, where he flew phantom jets.

Following his honorable discharge, Jim returned to OSU and finished his engineering degree.  Jim's first job out of college was with Ingersoll Rand, working on pipeline in various states, including Alaska. His engineering mind kept him moving from job to job, and place to place, until he finally settled down in Talala, where he put his mind to use in farming.

He became mostly self-sustaining by raising cows, turkeys and chickens, as well as keeping bees and a vegetable garden. His engineering mind was always thinking of better ways to tackle a specific problem. Jim crafted many inventions through the years and had many plans on paper for more.

Jim’s life was filled with many accomplishments and he was the type that shared his good fortune to those who had less. He volunteered at Hope Harbor, doing what he could to make a difference. His hobbies were many — he loved to sail, tinker with his cars, and was a trained scuba diver. Jim’s family was most important to him and took every opportunity to spend time with them.

He claimed the nieces and nephews as his own kids and they learned many life lessons which Jim passed down to them.

A man that gave to his country and family, Jim leaves a legacy to those family members that survive, which include his brother Pete Heinen and wife Jayne of Amarillo, Texas; his sister-in-law Kay Heinen of Talala; his beloved nieces and nephews Brenda Brown and husband Chet of Elko, Minnesota; Steve Heinen and wife Samantha of Tulsa; Dena Edwards and husband Aaron of Edmond; Dustin Heinen and wife Erin of Arlington, Texas; Danielle Meanor and husband Mike of Little Elm, Texas; and Hunter Heinen of Plano, Texas. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Tom Heinen and Larry Heinen.

Those who wish to honor Jim’s memory with a memorial contribution may do so by contributing to Hope Harbor, P.O. Box 1047, Claremore, 74018.
