Mary Elizabeth Carpenter

A celebration of the life of Mary E. Carpenter will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, Dec., 23, 2013 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow. Visitation will be Sunday from 1-5 with family receiving visitors. Mary passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 18. She was 79.
Born on June 26, 1934 in Prue, Okla. to Bill and Elsie (Lay) Dixon, Mary was an extraordinary person.  Mary married Richard Carpenter on June 6, 1976 and their union was gifted with seven children.  Mary was a homemaker and an exceptional mother and grandmother.  A wonderful cook, Mary loved to prepare her many special recipes for her family.
Some of her family’s favorites include her fried apple pies, chicken and dumplings, rolls and dressing. Mary especially enjoyed sharing the Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts because that’s when all the family would gather around. Even the exterminator set aside extra time when called the Carpenter home so that he and Richard could finish a pot of coffee and enjoy Mary’s famous fried apple pies.
Mary was an independent and strong person, always taking care of her home and family. Mary’s family said you couldn’t do things for her because she would go back and do it herself anyway.
The family said they could not have asked for a better mother that loved any harder than Mary. They also said she was “a one of a kind person” and “they don’t make them like her anymore.”
A spirited woman, Mary loved to dance or “shake a leg” as she called it. She was also a lover of nature and the outdoors, taking many opportunities to enjoy fishing in Winganon on Oologah Lake.  She liked to garden and one garden was not enough so she made another. Mary would can what she could from the garden and freeze the rest to share and enjoy later. Mary also cared for many animals including cows, pigs, chickens and rabbits as means to sustain her family.
