Roy Lee Boren

CLAREMORE — Roy Lee Boren was born in Eureka, Kan. on April 4, 1940 to Allen and Nellie Boren. He loved sports and in high school, was involved in track, football and basketball. Roy also loved to roller skate and met his first wife JoAnn Brown at the local roller rink where all the kids would hang out. They also went to the same church where JoAnn’s father, Levi, led a youth group.

After high school he joined the Army National Guard as a Military Policeman, and married JoAnn in September 1960. The following year his daughter Debbie was born and after moving to El Dorado in 1963, they had another daughter, Terri. Roy and his young family later moved to Wichita where he had various jobs including a salesman at an appliance store. They were divorced in 1965.

In 1969, Roy married his second wife, Joan Daniels, who had a young son named Rue. Roy and Joan were married for 11 years and during that time moved the family to Oklahoma. Roy raised Rue as his own son and their relationship continued after Joan and Dad divorced in 1980. Rue remembers his Dad as being good-natured, unselfish, and modest and was always there to help and support him without him needing to ask for help.

In 1981, Roy met Yolanda McClendon who had two young sons, Jason and David. Yolanda had started attending church, but Roy was hesitant, feeling he needed to clean up his act first. After attending a revival meeting while Yolanda was at work, he finally realized that he could come “as he was”, a sinner, and be loved by Christ. Roy rededicated his life to Christ in 1982 on his and Yolanda’s first wedding anniversary (or so he thought...) In 1985, Roy and Yolanda were blessed with a son, Andrew.

In 1989, Roy and Yolanda moved to Verdigris to raise their three boys and started attending Church on the Move. In 2006 they started attending a small group bible study where Roy made many close friends and grew in his personal relationship with Christ.

Roy was employed at Nordam as a Quality Control Inspector and worked there from 1977 until his retirement in 2009. However, Roy wasn’t ready to stop working quite yet. He figured out he could work as a Marshall once a week at the Scissortail golf course to support one of his favorite activities, golf. In addition to golf, Roy enjoyed playing pool and bowling, although he was an excellent player, he never boasted and was very modest about winning. Andrew remembers the time he waited for his Dad to get home from his bowling league and asked him how he did. He shrugged his shoulders and said “I did all right”.  Andrew took a look at the score card from the game, it took him a minute to realize that his Dad had bowled a 300, a perfect game.

Of all the sports and activities Roy was involved in, what he really enjoyed most was spending time with his family and the love of his life, his wife Yolanda. Roy will be greatly missed by all his family and friends and is remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

A memorial service for Roy L. Boren was Saturday, Jan., 4, 2014 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Roy passed away Tuesday, Dec., 31, 2013. He was 73.
