CLAREMORE — Memorial services for Vivian Louise Sawyer will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service.  Vivian passed away April 18, 2013. She was 80.

Born on October 24, 1932 in Fort Worth, Texas, to William and Merilda (Thomas) Pettigrew, Vivian was raised and educated in her birth community.  She met Frank Sawyer and they married on June 3, 1950 at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Fort Worth, Texas.  Their marriage lasted 60 years and was blessed with three sons.

Vivian loved her career in the bakery at Winn Dixie Grocery store, maintaining the position of deli manager for 13 years before she retired in 1983. She was a member of DAV and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas before moving to Oklahoma in 1988 and becoming a member at Church at Claremore, now Destiny Life Church.

She had a great sense of humor, a sharp wit and always knew how to bring light and laughter to her conversations.  Vivian enjoyed visiting with her friends and was skilled at embroidery.  She also liked to relax and watch her favorite shows and cowboy westerns on television.

A strong believer that wisdom was gained through the study of God’s Word, Vivian was known to some as a praying grandmother.  A grandmother of four and great grandmother of four, her grandchildren were the world to her. She knew how to talk common sense and had a way of encouraging her children to work and do their very best.  She always made sure they had plenty to eat and loved to cook for them.  She was quiet the accomplished chef and some of her favorites to cook were fried catfish, smothered steak with mashed potatoes, roast beef with potatoes and gravy or fried potatoes.

Vivian never failed to have bread and dessert prepared along with her meals. When she did not feel like cooking it was a special treat for her to go to Golden Corral for dinner.

Her family said of her that she was the bond and thread that held this family together.  This mother, grandmother and friend will be missed by all who knew her.  She is survived by her son Frank Sawyer, Jr. of Claremore; grandchildren, Alicia Didlot and husband Ray, Alan Sawyer and wife Amanda, Melanie and Shawn Sawyer; great grandchildren, Tera Collins, Emma Bennett, Joshua Didlot and Liam Sawyer arriving June 12, 2013, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Sawyer, Sr., two sons Jerry and Bobby Sawyer, sisters Rosalee and Joyce, brother Billy Pettigrew, Jr. and grandchildren Brian and Benjamin Sawyer.
