Junior Grover Carter

CLAREMORE — Services celebrating the life of Junior Carter will be Monday, April 28th, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Verdigris.

His pastor, Reverend Gerald Biswell will share words of comfort. Junior will be laid to rest in the Veteran’s Field of Honor at Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow.

Rice Funeral Service has been entrusted with Junior’s care. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-6 p.m., with family there to receive visitors. Junior passed away Thursday evening, April 24th, 2014. He was 88.

Born September 8th, 1925, in Lone Oak, Texas, Junior was the only

son of Grover Fletcher and Sarah Rutilda (Bull) Carter. When he was still a toddler, the Carter’s made their home in Chelsea, Oklahoma.

They later moved to the Oklahoma community of Haskell, where Junior became a student at the Rock Hammer Country School. As the family made Perryville, Ark. home, he would complete his education in that community.

During those school years, Junior and Maxine “Mickie” Brown became acquainted during their bus rides. When Junior entered military service with the United States Army and Mickie began her work career, the two continued to correspond through letters. While he was stationed  in Texas, they decided to begin their lives together as husband and wife.

Their wedding took place on April 30th, 1948 in Belton, Texas and they have remained committed to one another for almost 66 years.

A team in everything they did;  together, they lovingly reared their two sons. As grandchildren and great grandchildren were joyfully added to the Carter family, a legacy of faith and integrity threaded firmly through the generations.

Following his honorable discharge, Junior and Mickie returned to make their home in Oklahoma, first Tulsa and later the rural area of Verdigris.

Junior’s strong work ethic made him a valuable employee as a steel melter for the Oklahoma Steel Casting Company. After more than 34 years of faithful service to his career, Junior retired in 1982.

A man devoted to his church, First Baptist of Verdigris, his Godly example reached far beyond the church walls. Whether he was fishing, serving wild game at the church social events, coming alongside his co-workers, coaching baseball for his boy’s teams or sharing the fruits of his labor from his bountiful garden, Junior was always a strong example to everyone. He found joy in humbly giving of himself.

This kind hearted, gentle but strong man leaves all who knew him with treasures of fond memories. He is survived by his life partner, wife, Maxine “Mickie” Carter of their home in Verdigris; his 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Pat Carter of Owasso and Russell “Rusty” and Lisa Carter of Tulsa; 3 grandchildren, Tara Carnes and her husband Shaun of Sapulpa, Megan Carter of Dallas and Stephen Carter of Fayetteville, Ark.; 1 great grandson, Dakota Carnes of Sapulpa and a second great grandson on the way, Vincent Carter,  and a sister, Della Payne and her husband J. W. of Walker, La.
