Services for Mary Elizabeth Beck will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 15, 2013 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Oakhaven Memorial Gardens.
Mary passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013. She was 98.
Born on January 7, 1915 in Le Flore, OK to Dr. George R. and Margaret Graham (Bell) Booth, Mary was reared and educated in her birth community.
She graduated from LaFlore High School in 1932, she went on to attend college in Chickasha at Oklahoma Women’s College and Southeastern Oklahoma State College in Durant where she earned a teaching certificate.
She then earned a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Oklahoma State University. Mary and Alonzo had a passion for teaching children and taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades at many schools including Red Oak, Quinton, Eufaula, Keota, Talala, Oologah and Foyil schools.
After 37 years Mary retired from teaching in May of 1977.
On October 24, 1934 Mary married Alonzo Beck in Durant, OK where they met at Southeastern Oklahoma State College.
Their union was blessed with two daughters, Sue Karen and Kathy Gail. Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Claremore where she lived. She enjoyed reading, cross word puzzles, oil painting and embroidery. She loved visiting with her family and friends and spending time with them.
As an animal lover, Mary cherished her many cats.
This loving mother, grandmother and sister will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
Mary is survived by her daughters Sue Karen Massey and husband George of Bixby, Kathy Gail Gordon of Tulsa; grandchildren Lisa Massey Powell and husband Eric of Higginsville, MO and Dr. Emily Gordon Ferrel and husband Mike of Wynnewood, PA; great grandchildren Caitlin Powell, Ava, Deacon and Edie Ferrel; sister Phyllis Adams and husband Charles of Wilberton; many nieces and nephews; and good friends Paul and Judith Henson and Glenn and Barbara Welsh. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband Alonzo, brothers Dr. George Booth, Jr., Dr. Graham Booth, and Dr. James Booth and sister Margaret Shaw.
