Graveside services with military honors for Fred L. Castleman, Sr. will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Oakhaven Memorial Garden’s Veteran Field of Honor. Visitation will also be Wednesday from 8-2 p.m. at Rice Funeral Service.
Fred passed away on Monday, July 1, 2013. He was 89.
Born in Marshall, Ark. on Sept. 23, 1923 to Joe Hall and Mary Catherine (Turner) Castleman, Fred was one of 8 children. Raised in Seminole, Okla., educated at Taylor grade school and Bowlegs high school, where he graduated. Fred entered the U.S. Navy and became a Parachute Rigger and served aboard the USS Munda Bay during World War II. After receiving his honorable discharge, Fred began employment at Boeing where he became a Superintendent of Quality Control Management until he retired in 1978.
In 1982 Fred made his home in Rogers County and on May 14, 1986 Fred married Gerre Pitts in a ceremony in Wagoner, Okla. Their union was blessed with 4 children. Family was the cornerstone of Fred’s life. Fred never failed to let his family know that he loved them. He thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings for cookouts where he always requested that David grill his prime rib. Fred also enjoyed hunting and fishing, his favorite fishing destination was Spencer Creek at Oologah Lake.
A lover of nature and an avid gardener, Fred enjoyed the peace and relaxation that came along with growing his own tomatoes, cucumbers and green onions. Fred was looking forward to his 90th birthday and eating one of his favorite dishes, chocolate cake smothered with brown beans. He also had two other great loves, Annie and Kimmie, his Yorkie dogs he referred to as “his girls.”
This loving husband, father and grandfather will be terribly missed by all whose lives he touched. Fred is survived by his wife of 27 years Gerre of the home in Claremore; children Fred Castleman, Jr. and wife Anita of Florida, David Pitts and Dennis Pitts of Claremore, Kenney Pitts and wife Kristi of Tulsa; grandchildren Mike Pitts and wife Pam, Travis Pitts and wife Jody, Waren Pitts, Nick Pitts and wife Brittany, Aaron, Ryan, Lynn, Katie and Erin; great grandchildren Lane, Wyatt, Grayson and Nicholas and numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. He was also a member of the VA and DAV.
