Flo (Rock) Guthrie

CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Flo (Rock) Guthrie will be 10 a.m., Friday Feb. 15, 2013 at First Baptist Church.  Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, under the direction of Rice Funeral Service.  Friends may visit at the funeral home today, from 1—7, with family receiving visitors from 5—7.  Flo left her earthly home to be with her Lord and Savior on Mon. Feb. 11, 2013. She was 70.

Born in Porum, Okla. on August 4, 1942 to Charlie and Lillian (Boland) Rock, Flo was educated in Warner, graduating from Warner High School with the class of 1961.  In 1960 she and Arlan Walters were married and this union was blessed with 2 children.  The couple made Texas home before moving to Tulsa and in 1973 made a move to Claremore.

Flo continued her education by attending Brookside Hair Styling Academy in Tulsa.  She began her 42 year career as a beautician, with hard work and determination that resulted in the ownership of her own hair salon in the community she was so passionate about.  Recognized as an accomplished beautician, Flo served on the advisory board for the cosmetology department at the Northeast Technology Center. Later in life, Flo attended Rogers State University where she studied Public Administration and Psychology.

On Sept. 15, 1996, Flo and Benny Guthrie were united in marriage; together they made their home in Claremore. Benny became Flo’s biggest fan, supporting her in all of her endeavors.  A wonderful blessing to the family, Benny was an exceptional caregiver to Flo in her last months. Always caring and unselfish about her well-being, he was devoted to her every need.

Her passion for her community and knowledge from her studies laid the foundation for her involvement in city government.  Holding the title of City Councilwoman and Mayor, Flo was also very active in numerous civic organizations, The Lions Club, Rotary Club and an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce, to name a few.  Flo’s belief in Claremore and the vision she had for the future was the motivation that compelled her to spend countless hours working to make Claremore a more family friendly community.

Flo’s faith in God and the teachings through His Word was the foundation in which she built her own family on.  Her first priority was in the caring and nurturing of her children and those beloved grand and great-grandchildren throughout their lives.  This same kindness also extended to many close friends as well.

As an on-the-go lady, Flo loved to travel and she enjoyed visiting Hawaii, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta and Destin; her favorite being Panama City.  Although these were beautiful destinations, Flo was just as content camping with her family and fishing at Ft. Gibson Lake.  Holidays were quite special with all of the Christmas parties and family gatherings she attended.

A dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and community ambassador, Flo leaves a treasure of memories to her loving family and a legacy to the city of Claremore that will never be forgotten.  Those that survive include her husband Benny of their home; her children Tammy Walters Roberts and husband Mark and Jeff Walters all of Claremore; her grandchildren Tiffany Meeker and husband Keenan, Taylor Roberts and wife Elizabeth and Tanner Roberts; her great-grandchildren Payton Smith, Elim Meeker, Sunday Roberts and Scout Roberts; her siblings Herbert Rock of Alma, AR, June Walker, Sarah Rex and John Wayne Rock all of Claremore; her sister-in-law Bernice Rock and brother-in-law Gene Turner.  Flo was preceded in death by her parents; sister Mary Turner and brother Charlie Rock, Jr.
