Jimmie G. “Jim” Bennett

CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Jimmie G. “Jim” Bennett will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 at First Christian Church.  Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-7 with family receiving visitors from 5-7 at the funeral home. Jim passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2014. He was 67.

Born in Tulsa, Okla. on Sept. 5, 1946 to Gail and Lucile (Cantrell) Bennett, Jim was raised in Tulsa and graduated from Chelsea High School with the class of 1964. After graduation Jim attended Oklahoma Military Academy before entering the United States Army and faithfully serving his country in the Vietnam War.   After receiving his honorable discharge Jim worked for American Airlines until his retirement in 2007.

During his career and because of his ingenuity, Jim was able to design a small part that saved the company thousands of dollars. To show their appreciation the company rewarded Jim with new furniture for their home and a new car.

In 1965 Jim met the love of his life, Leslie Oliver, at her father’s restaurant, Dick’s Grill, in Tulsa. The smell of the greasy hamburgers was, to Jim, much better than any perfume.

While he worked across the street from Dick’s Grill, Leslie often watched to see if Jim was carrying out groceries for any other young ladies.

As fate would have it, Jim proposed to Leslie and she accepted as he was, in her opinion, as close to Elvis as she could get with his looks and the sneer. The

two were married in 1968 at First Christian Church and their union was gifted with three children.

Jim was a wonderful husband and father but the words he loved to hear the most were “Pop pop.”

Jim had a passion for helping people.  A big supporter and volunteer for the Rogers County Special Olympics, Jim made a powerful and benevolent impact in the lives of many people.

Many affectionately referred to Jim as “Big Jim” not because of his stature but because of the size of his heart. Jim was also recognized by the American Red Cross for his generous blood donations which numbered over 1800 units.

His children recall family vacations, a legacy that they are continuing with their own families, were always a favorite for Jim.  Those vacations took the family to new numerous destinations, the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Mount Rushmore, Los Angeles and Mexico for five minutes.

Another favorite was Jim’s daily ritual of watching Wheel of Fortune, often much to the dismay of his family members. Jim loved sports and was an avid OU and Dallas Cowboy fan.

After retirement Jim was unable to play golf because of his declining health and much to his disappointment.

This loving husband, father and grandfather will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Leslie Bennett; children Robyn Dobson and husband Jason, Laurie Bennett and Adam Bennett and wife Sarah; grandchildren Joseph Dobson and Adaya Bennett; brothers Leonard and Charlie; sisters Barbara and Darla; numerous nieces and nephews. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosetta, brother Allen and his mother and father-in-law.

In lieu of flowers or other condolences, please consider making a donation in Jim Bennett’s name to the Rogers County Special Olympics of Oklahoma, P.O. Box 1364, Claremore, OK 74018.
