Dr. Vergil Don Smith

CLAREMORE — Services for Dr. Vergil Don Smith, 82, of Marietta, Okla. will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2013, in the Marietta School Auditorium with Rev. Tommy Higle officiating.

Interment, under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Marietta, will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.

Dr. Smith was born Dec. 10, 1930 in Seminole, Okla., the son of Vergil Eagon Smith and Nathamay Brown Smith.

He passed away Monday, Dec. 9, near his home in Marietta.

A 1948 graduate of Claremore High School, he then attended Oklahoma A&M.

He also graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of Kansas City, Mo. in 1961. As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Smith practiced one year in Tulsa, Okla. and then moved to Marietta in 1963.

In addition to practicing here for 50 years, he was instrumental in getting a hospital for Marietta. In 1995/96 Dr. Smith was honored as the O.A.P.A. Physician of the Year and in 2001 recognized as a life member of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association.

As a veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a radio repairman. In 1971 he received his pilot's license and in 1992 commercial pilot training and commercial license instrument rating. In 2003 Dr. Smith received CE-500 citation jet training.

In addition he was recognized by the FAA as a certified medical examiner.

Dr. Smith and the former Marilyn Howland were married in Oklahoma City, OK on Jan. 15, 2005.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Judy Smith on Sept. 27, 2001; and brother, Tommy Lee Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of the home; four sons and daughter-in-law, Sam Smith of Dallas, Texas, Richard Smith of Ardmore, OK, David and Diane Smith of Nashville, TN and Luke Smith of Sikeston, Mo.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Randy Johnson of Ardmore, Susan and Kenneth Kozak of Sherman, Texas, Sandra and Tom Robison of Sikeston and Brooke Chapman of Marietta; stepson, Ryan and Kari Fieszel of Mustang, OK; two stepdaughters, Ginny and Robert Davis and Stephanie and Jake Lippert of Oklahoma City; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Gayle Smith of Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Judy Eagleton of Claremore and Nancy and Joe Bradshaw of Roff, Okla.; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and the family dog, Mister Squire.

Casket bearers will be Sam Smith, Richard Smith, David Smith, Luke Smith, Richard Barker and Robin Smith. Honorary bearers are the staff of Mercy Health Love County and Mercy Health Love County Rural Health Clinic and his many patients and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

    She operated one of Claremore’s first daycare for children. She died Friday, July 11, 2014 at the age of 86.
