Dorothy Mae Washom

CLAREMORE — Graveside services for Dorothy Mae Washom will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013 at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 1-7 with family receiving visitors from 5-7 p.m.

Dorothy passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013. She was 88.

Born in Bradford, Ark. on March 16, 1925, Dorothy was the daughter of Andy and Irene (Layton) Dotson.  She grew up and attended school in both Foyil and the Catoosa area until she met the love of her life, Robert Washom.

She enjoyed telling the story of how they met –he was wearing a white shirt and a cowboy hat and riding in a horse and buggy - she was smitten from that moment on.

Dorothy and Robert were married on Oct. 2, 1942 and they were one day short of celebrating 60 years of marriage when Robert passed away in October of 2003. Having suffered with complications with tuberculosis, Dorothy was to have been unable to have children; however she and Robert were blessed with four children.

One of the hardest working women ever, Dorothy was known to set the kids in the shade while she picked cotton or harvested pecans. Then she would head up the hill hauling both pecans and kids-whatever it took to make sure the Washom children’s Christmas holidays were special.  She began her official work career in Tulsa at the age of 16.  After her mother’s passing Dorothy, purchased Nell’s café from Nell Spark’s which is now known as the familiar Dot’s Café.  She had worked for Bob Higgins at Mason Coffee Shop and knew quite a bit about restaurants.  A true blue waitress, Dorothy was always dressed in starched apron, hose and hanky. Dorothy made many happy memories at Dot’s and went on to operate two more Dot’s restaurants until Robert became ill and then she sold it to Melinda and stayed home to care for her husband for several years.

Dorothy was an animal lover and always made sure the wild birds in her front and back yard had plenty to eat. Her dear companion was a dog she called “My Taco.” The two were always together.

A woman with a big heart, Dorothy gave to many charities.  She also took care of a lot of people.  Even in her last days she was worrying about what to get her loved ones for Christmas.  She will be missed more than we can say but now she can finally rest.

This loving mother and grandmother will be missed by all who knew her.  Dorothy is survived by her children Larry and Ronnie Washom, Melinda Knight and husband Bobby; grandchildren Larry Shane, Andy, and Adam Washom, Brandi Gatzemeyer, Misti Knight, Dusty Knight, Tammy Wels, LaDonna Padgitt and Lori Kemp; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and her little dog Taco.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Washom, daughter Donna Kemp, grandson Billy Bob Knight, brothers Delbert, Tommy and Bill Dotson, sisters Pauline Sessions and Betty Inholfe.
