Buford Thomas Dorsey

CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Buford Thomas Dorsey will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at Verdigris Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 2-7 with family receiving visitors from 5-7 p.m.

Buford passed away on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014. He was 91.

Born on December 23, 1922 to Albert and Stella (Neal) Dorsey in Verdigris, Okla., Buford was raised and self-educated in his birth community. He spent his childhood days hunting and fishing in the Verdigris river bottoms.

On December 15, 1945 Buford and Dorothy Lois Roberts were married by Reverend C.O. Haymaker, Pastor of First Assembly of God in Claremore. Their union was blessed with two sons, Darrell Duane and Glenn Thomas. The family made their home in Verdigris for several years.

Buford worked for McDonnell Douglas for several years before he was called into the ministry. Buford was an evangelist for 5 years before pastoring. He was the last Charter Trustee Member of Verdigris Assembly of God. Buford was licensed with the Assemblies of God in 1955 and ordained in 1960. Always a man of fun and laughter, but Buford was very serious when it came to ministering the gospel. He was a very successful pastor and pastored 6 churches in Oklahoma and Arkansas until 1984 when failing health pushed him to slow down.

After retirement, Buford returned to Verdigris where he enjoyed being outdoors and gardening. He loved to grow enough vegetables in his garden to feed not only his family but also his neighbors.  Buford was an avid dog lover and also spent time training his bird dogs.

This loving father and grandfather will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Buford is survived by his sons, Darrell Dorsey and wife Myrna of Verdigris, and Pastor Glenn Dorsey and wife Gladys of Beebe, Arkansas; 4 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren, 9 step-great grandchildren; 6 step-great-great grandchildren; brothers Rev. Don Dorsey and Billy Dorsey of Claremore and Albert (Chick) Dorsey of Verdigris; and a host of nieces and nephews. Buford was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Roberts Dorsey; his parents, sisters Wanda Dalton and Ima Butler, brothers Jody Dorsey and Wayne Dorsey and wife Beatrice, half sister Rema Scott, and daughter-in-law Joyce Dorsey.
