Wayne James Chapin, Sr.

CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Wayne James Chapin, Sr. was 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Burial followed in Lone Elm Cemetery.

Wayne passed away on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014. He was 72.

Born on Dec. 3, 1941 in Richland County, N.D. to John and LaVerne (Jackson) Chapin, Wayne graduated high school before faithfully serving his country in the United States Air Force. Salem, Oregon was home during his service and in 1963 Wayne met and married the love of his life, Linda Burke Chapin. Their union was blessed with two children, Shannon and Jim. Claremore became the family’s home in 1996.

A friendly and outgoing person, Wayne met and made friends easily, some said he collected friends like collecting memorabilia. A story-teller by nature, Wayne’s legacy lives in the stories he loved to tell. In particular, he loved to tell stories about racing or travel, two of his passions. Wayne, a thrill seeker and explorer, traveled throughout the entire United States from Canada to South Texas in his RV.

He was also a huge auto racing fan and one of his most memorable trips was his trip to the Indy 500. Wayne loved anything with speed and an engine. He was a member of the Porche Club of America and Good Guys Hot Rod Association.

An intelligent man, Wayne thought very much like an Engineer. If someone asked him for the time, he might explain to them how a clock worked. Wayne was known to be a man that could fix anything. His family recalls him fixing his son’s car on the side of the road with the top of a ball point pen. Two of Wayne’s favorite sayings include “If man made it, man can fix it” and “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.”

This loving father, grandfather and friend will be missed by all who knew him. Wayne is survived by his daughter Shannon Chance, son Jim Chapin and wife Lorraine; grandchildren Stephanie Shavers and husband Kenneth, Jeremy Chance, Corey Chance, Emily Dale Chapin, Ryan Joseph Chapin and Parker James Chapin; great grandchildren Shiloe, Makenna, Jayse, Maverick, Kiana; brothers John and Allen Chapin. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 35 years Linda Chapin.
