Joel T. Walker Sr.

CLAREMORE — Graveside services for Joel T. Walker Sr. were today at Woodlawn Cemetery.  Joel passed away on Monday, June 17, 2013. He was 75 years old.

Born in Tiawah, Okla. on Jan. 1, 1938, Joel was one of three children gifted to Joseph and Nettie (Bowman) Walker.

He was raised and educated in his birth community and graduated from Claremore High School in 1956.

After graduation Joel enlisted in the U.S. Army and faithfully served his country until receiving an honorable discharge in 1964.

On Feb. 13, 1959 Joel married Wanda Brassfield in a ceremony in Claremore and their union was blessed with six children.

Joel’s first employment was with Tulsa Tractor and then with Peabody Coal where he was a master electrician and a member of the United Mine Workers of America.  He retired after 21 years of employment.

Joel had a great appreciation for family and enjoyed spending time with them especially his grandchildren.  A favorite holiday gathering was always held on the 4th of July for a day of swimming and fireworks at the lake in Salina.

He still found time for a variety of other interests as well – painting cars, motorcycles and as an avid rider he even rode in the ice and snow.  Computers were also one of Joel’s preferred hobbies.  Considered to be a technologically savvy, he would spend countless hours making his computers run faster.

Joel’s family remembers his love of gardening and they were the recipients of his harvest.

Joel worked diligently to perfect his popcorn crop and it was said by some only because he acquired a taste for burnt popcorn.

Joel was what his family called a sun worshiper and many times he could be found outside perfecting his tan in the “bull pin” which he constructed out of Beaver wood.

This loving father, grandfather and friend will be missed by all who knew him.  Joel is survived by his children Johnda Tuttle and husband Brian of Swartz Creek, MI, Fonda Rankin and husband Paul of Claremore, Joel Walker Jr. and wife Lois of Claremore, Andrew Walker and wife Melissa of Tulsa, Tim Walker and Joel Walker III also of Claremore; grandchildren Don Cook, Brian Walker, Brandy Tuttle, Dakota Walker, Kymberly Strange, Andrew Walker Jr., Amber Walker, Katie Hudson, Gracie Hudson, Bryan Davis, Anthony Compton, Scott Rankin, and Amanda Rankin; brother Dale Walker and wife Pat, sister Linda Smith and husband Warren; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Joel is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 34 years, Wanda and his grandson Dan Cook.
