Helen Louise Lewis

CLAREMORE — A service celebrating the life of Helen Louise Lewis will be 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 at North Park Trinity Baptist Church; burial will follow at Oakhaven Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit at the funeral home today from 1—7 with family receiving visitors from 5-7 p.m.

Helen passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2013. She was 87.

Born on April 27, 1926 in Claremore, to Grover Cleveland and Bertha Bell (Miller) Bowen, Helen was reared and educated in her birth community.

Following her schooling, she began working for McClellan’s five & dime. Later Helen became the first employee to be hired at the new Wal-Mart in Claremore. She was quite proud of her employer and was a faithful worker for 20 years.

On Aug. 15, 1942 Helen married Garland Lewis in a Claremore ceremony. Their union was blessed with 3 children. Helen may have worked outside her home, but her family and their well-being came first.

She saw to their every need as a loving mother should. She was happily involved with the caring of her grandchildren. Helen enjoyed each one and spent all the time she could with them.

They were taught how to behave and she kept them on the straight and narrow. She always wanted the best for them and even though she was a little strict, they knew how much they were loved.

Helen was a wonderful cook and loved preparing holiday meals for her family. She didn’t much like cleaning the turkey; usually Marsha was given this task.

Her main focus was having her family with her. The family said that Helen’s home was always clean and neat, something she passed down to some of her offspring.

She loved a good game of dominos and usually would win. Helen was probably the biggest OU and Dallas Cowboy fan around. She supported the local Claremore Zebras as well.

Helen loved life, her infectious laugh and sweet smile would let you know she loved you. She lived her faith and you knew that she loved the Lord and supported her church throughout her life, making sure her family knew him personally as well.

A loving, spirited mother, grandmother and friend, Helen will be missed by all who knew her.

Those family members that survive include her daughter Marsha Lewis of Claremore; her grandchildren Robert Lewis and wife Cindy, Danette Sanders and husband Wendell, Julie Hogan and husband Mike and Michael Lewis all of Claremore, Gabrielle Ferrell and husband Kris of Owasso, Vicki Reese and husband Michael of Pryor and Veronica Martin and husband David of Choteau; her brother Frank Bowen and wife Gerry of Tulsa; 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Garland, sons Danny Lewis and Ronnie Lewis, sisters Irma Lee Box and Betty Leach and brothers Cecil Bowen and Raymond Bowen.

Flowers are appreciated and for those wishing to make a contribution, the family request they be made to the American Heart Association 7272 Greenville Ave. Dallas, TX  75231, or the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311.
