CLAREMORE —  Fred Lee Hemphill was born on April 22, 1923 in Chelsea, Okla. to James Goodman Hemphill and Lucy Mae (Adams) Hemphill. He graduated from Chelsea High School.

Fred served in the US Navy during World War II from July 25, 1942 until Nov. 20, 1947. Fred married Margaret Joan Jordan on May 20, 1950 in Adair, Okla.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Chelsea, Oklahoma.

Fred died on Sunday May 12 at his home in Chelsea. He was 90.

He was preceded death by his wife Joan on March 1, 2013 and daughter Danette Cherry who died on April 13, 1993, also by his parents.

He is survived by: granddaughter, Deborah Cherry of Tulsa, Okla.; brother, Robert Hemphill and wife Esther of Shellknob, Mo.; nephews, Roger Bowman and wife Debbie of Adair, Okla., Don Bowman and wife Vernetta of Chelsea, Okla., Darrell Hemphill and wife Chris of Wichita, Kan., and Tony Cruz of Texas; nieces, Anna Parks and husband Eugene of Chelsea, Okla., Sue Hardage and husband David of Missouri, Pat Spangler and husband Jerry of Claremore, Okla., Pam Rue of Claremore, and Carol Hemphill of Derby, Kan.; sister-in-law, Gwenlyn Ruth Fry and husband Larry of Grandberry, Texas; several grand and great-nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Seaman Blanke Funeral Home in Chelsea.  

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 at the First Baptist Church in Chelsea with Pastor Scotty Behm officiating, Music by Nancy Edenfield with singers Bill and Melanie Parks. Casket Bearers are. Dalton Bowman, Rick Parks, Todd Rue, Mason Dicks,  Roy Dean Bowman, Tyler Christian, Marshall Dicks, Greg Bowman and Pete Bowman. Burial will follow in the Dawes Cemetery near Chelsea, Okla.
