Marjorie Dunn

CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Marjorie Dunn will be 10 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Claremore. Burial will be in Zebulon, Georgia. Marjorie passed away on Monday, June 17, 2013. She was 90.

Born in Liberty Center, Ohio on July 24, 1922 to Charles and Mazie (Kniss) Cody, Marjorie, one of fourteen children, was raised and educated in her birth community until the third grade when the family moved to Gladewater, Texas. Sharp as a whip, Marjorie graduated in 1938, two years early at the age of 16. After graduation she went on to earn her Associates degree from Eastern State University.

While attending a military social at the Putnam City Baptist Church, Marjorie met her future husband, Robert Dunn. She was going downstairs and he was coming upstairs, when they first met. At first Marjorie had trouble understanding Robert’s southern Georgia drawl. During World War II while Robert was stationed in Guam the two corresponded through letters and when he returned home to the United States, they married in Putnam City, Okla. on March 17, 1946. Their union was blessed with two children, Josee and Jedie.

Marjorie and Robert lived in Griffin, Ga. where they owned and operated a furniture store and built a house in the same community. In 1951 Claremore became their home, where Marjorie was a homemaker until 1960 when she went back to college at Tulsa University, graduating in 1962 with a BA in Education. That fall she began her teaching career at Owasso Public Schools. She taught 8th grade English for 22 years retiring in 1984. In 1980 she was Owasso Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year.

Marjorie, considered the family historian, loved genealogy and researched the Cody family and other descendants of the Liberty Center, OH area. She also loved gardening and making her yard beautiful. Marjorie was a strong woman who always supported and stood by her husband. She taught children’s classes at Memorial Heights Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist and ladies’ classes at Faith Baptist Church. For many years she taught the senior ladies’ class at First Baptist Church.  In 2003 she was awarded a plaque by First Baptist Church recognizing her 65 years of having taught Sunday School classes.

This loving mother, sister and teacher will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Marjorie is survived by her children Josee and Jedie Dunn of Claremore; her brother Richard Mac Cody of Modesto, Calif. and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years, six brothers and six sisters. In lieu of flowers or other condolences please consider making a donation to the charity of your choice.
