Gordon W. Kay

CLAREMORE — A Celebration of Life service for Gordon W. Kay will be 3 p.m., Thursday, May 8, 2014 at MMS-Payne Funeral Home Chapel in Claremore. Gordon passed away at his home on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at the age of 82.

Gordon was born March 24, 1932 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Dull Long and Stella (Felton) Kay. He was raised on a ranch and learned at an early age the knowledge of running a successful Registered Hereford cattle ranch. Gordon graduated from Chadron Preparatory High School with the class of 1949. He continued his education by attending the Colorado A&M College. In 1951 Gordon enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served his county aboard the USS Brinkley Bass during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Nebraska and his work on the ranch. On September 8, 1957 Gordon married Sue Smith and the couple made their home on the ranch until they moved to Mill Creek, Oklahoma and then to Stillwater where Gordon returned to college at Oklahoma State University.  Graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Economics from OSU in 1969, he and his family moved to Guymon, and then Atoka where Gordon worked for Production Credit Association as an agricultural lender. In the summer of 1978, the family moved to Claremore and this has been home since. Gordon worked as a real estate appraiser both for a company and later as an independent.

With all of his accomplishments and careers, the most important thing in Gordon’s life was his family. He cherished them and provided them with everything they needed. His wife and daughters are positive that, next to the definition of  'chivalry' in the dictionary, there is a picture of Gordon. During his spare time, Gordon loved taking care of his yard. He could be considered a master gardener, with a green thumb on both hands; his property was very meticulously cared for. For nearly 36 years in Glenwood Estates, Gordon’s neighbors thought he had the most beautiful and bountiful yard in the addition. He was a member of the American Legion, the Oklahoma Cornhusker Club, and the NRA. Gordon enjoyed cheering his teams, the Huskers and Cowboys every chance he could.

A kind and caring gentleman, Gordon will be missed by all who knew him. Those family members that survive include his wife Sue of their home; his daughters Julie Kay Hughes and husband Bud of Comfort, Texas and Jennifer Lea Kay and partner Nancy Borgstrom of Broken Arrow; grandsons Adam Hughes of San Antonio and Clay Hughes of Houston; his brothers Don Kay of Chadron, Nebraska and John Bryce Kay of Pasco, Washington; his sister Shirley Strom of Tacoma, Washington and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Eddie Kay and his mother-in-law Thea Smith.

Those who wish to honor Gordon’s memory with a memorial contribution may do so by contributing either to the Tiawah Volunteer Fire Department, the Tulsa Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, or the charity of your choice.
