A Celebration of Life for C. Michael Zacharias will be held Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the University of Tulsa, College of Law.
Zacharias, of Tulsa, Oklahoma passed peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 1, 2013 after a short battle with cancer. Zacharias was born on May 22, 1939 in Athol Springs, New York to Cliff and Helen Zacharias.
He moved to Oklahoma in 1959 and later attended the University of Tulsa where he received his journalism and law degrees.
He worked for the Tulsa World, Sapulpa Herald and Claremore Progress.
He began his legal career at the Tulsa County District Attorney’s office and then for the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. Over the next 42 years, he practiced law and also served as a Special District Judge in Tulsa County.
Zacharias was very active in the legal and academic communities as well as the community in which he lived. He received numerous awards for his volunteer and professional service. The Oklahoma Bar Association Family Law Section recently presented him the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award for Exemplary Service.
His hobbies included rowing, snow skiing, running, traveling, photography, cooking and eating.
He is survived by his son, Michael H. Zacharias of Claremore, Oklahoma; daughter Shelly Benton and husband, Dicus, of Catoosa, Oklahoma; daughter, Melissa Allen and husband, Steve of Allen, Texas; and daughter, Muffy Hoover and husband, Wayne of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandson and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and his grandson, D.J. Benton. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to The University of Tulsa, College of Law, C. Michael Zacharias Memorial Scholarship Fund.
