Jack Leonard Mohr

CLAREMORE — Jack Leonard Mohr, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died on May 3, 2013, of complications due to heart failure.

Mr. Mohr has been a member of the Chincoteague, Va. community since relocating to the island in 1997. Words cannot fully portray the man that was Mr. Mohr. A phrase often used to describe him is “What a Character!”.

While many people are only referring to his delightful and insightful sense of humor, those who truly knew him understood that the depth and breadth of his character was based upon his integrity, honesty, exceptional intelligence and loyalty.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1923 to Luis Leonard Mohr and Anna Louise Schroeder Mohr, Mr. Mohr spent his early years in Samne, Peru. As was the custom for children whose parents worked abroad, he was sent to the United States for his education.

He would travel unaccompanied by steamship through the Panama Canal, with stops in the Panama Canal Zone and Cuba before debarking in New York City. He attended Avondale Country School, Laurel, MD and Peddie School, Hightstown, N.J. During the summers he returned to Peru and engaged in all of the outdoor activities that made him feel “free”:  hunting, fishing and mountaineering in the Andean Mountains.

He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), majoring in Degree 15 (combined business and chemical engineering degree).

His education was interrupted by WWII, during which time he was selected to serve in the newly formed Tenth Mountain Division of the Army.

While in training at Camp Hale, Colorado, he contracted rheumatic fever, permanently damaging his heart.

After being hospitalized for three months, he was medically discharged and spent the following fifteen months on bed rest. He resumed his academic career at MIT in an accelerated program, graduating cum laude and on schedule, in 1946.

After graduation, Mr. Mohr worked for the Campbell Soup Company and Factory Boston. In 1961 he married June Elizabeth Cluderay and relocated to Oklahoma. He worked as an industrial marketing manager for Oklahoma Natural Gas for the remainder of his career.

He retired in 1986, after which he and his wife traveled extensively with trips to England, Spain, St. Georges Island, Florida, and the eastern seaboard.

A solitary man, Mr. Mohr preferred to spend his time with his wife and children. He loved gardening, fishing and hunting. Mr. Mohr enjoyed membership in various Chambers of Commerce, professional organizations, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.

Mr. Mohr is survived by his wife, June E. Mohr, Chincoteague Island, Va.; daughters, Constance Cherrix  of Long Eddy, N.Y., Wendy Hauser, DVM of Parker, Colo., and Stephanie Mohr-Lowery, DVM of Claremore, Okla.; seven grandchildren, including Shannon Walker of Chincoteague Island, Va.; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held May 6th at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Jenkins Bridge, Va., at 7 p.m., with a viewing one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be held at Washington Memorial Chapel, Valley Forge, Pa., with Military Honors, on Tuesday, May 7, at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 186, Oak Hall, VA  23416.

Memory tributes may be shared with the family at

Arrangements by the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home.
