CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Betty Jane Reed will be 1  p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service; burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.  Friends may visit at the funeral home on Mon., March 25, from 1-7 p.m.

Betty passed away on Thurs., March 21, 2013. She was 80.

Born in Coldwater, Kan. on June 9, 1932, to T.O. and Eva (Tapp) Alley, Betty was reared and educated in the Hardtner community.  While attending school, Betty became acquainted with a young man named Richard A. Reed.  A job on the ranch that Betty’s father managed became available and Richard happily applied.

This enabled their friendship to grow and eventually they were married on Aug. 15, 1950.  Richard enlisted in the US Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Korean War.  He was wounded during a battle saving other men around him.  He received 2 purple hearts and was honorably discharged.  During this time Betty lived in Ocean Side, Calif., to be near her husband.  The couple moved back to Kansas for a time before moving to Oklahoma in 1968, settling in their rural Claremore home.

Betty began working for a nursing home in Claremore and eventually received her nursing credentials.  She worked at the hospital for a time and then on to the Health Department.  She gave 26 years of faithful service to the many patients she saw during that time and enjoyed every minute of it.  Not only was Betty a hard worker, she gave her heart to each person she came into contact with.  They loved her and she formed many friendships through the years.

When Betty found time to relax, she was quite content being at her home.  She loved having her family over and spent as much time as she could with them.

She also shared her heart and home with God’s little creatures.  Her dogs were well cared for and if she found one needing a home she welcomed them in.  She also collected Angles and enjoyed displaying them around her house.

Kind and caring, with a servant’s heart, Betty will be missed by her beloved family and those fortunate to have known her.  Those family members who survive include her children Richard “Pete” Reed of Claremore, Teresa Duncan of Yukon, OK and Lisa Reed and fiancé Jeremy Taylor also of Claremore; her grandchildren Adam Reed and Jordan Reed, Kyle Klontz and Darby Klontz, Sarah Duncan Fox and husband Joshua and Trent Thomas; her great grandchildren Katie and Jake Klontz and Noah and Ian Klontz; and her sister Carolyn Groat of Boise ID.  Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard and sisters Virginia Ishmael and Marie Mitchell and her twin brother Jack “Bud” Alley.
