Alice Driver

CLAREMORE — A Celebration of Life Service for Alice Driver will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-7 p.m., with family receiving visitors from 5 – 7 p.m.

Alice left her earthly home for her eternal Heavenly home on Saturday November 9, 2013. She was 87.

Born in Chandler, Okla. on Oct. 16, 1926, Alice was one of five children gifted to James and Ida Miller Grider. She was raised and educated in several different states before the family returned to Claremore in 1942, enabling Alice to graduate with the Claremore High School Class of 1944.

After graduation, Alice’s father helped her get a job with Oklahoma Steel Casting and this is where she met Grant Driver. After a few years of courtship, the couple tied the knot February 14, 1948 in Miami, Okla.

After marrying, Alice was able to become a full time Homemaker and God soon gave them the gift of three sons.

Alice excelled at this new role; she was referred to as the first woman to love her boys unconditionally with all her heart and soul.

Because of Alice and Grant’s frugalness they were able to buy a house full of furniture for their first home, and their home was also the favorite hang out for all the kids’ friends. Not only because Alice was a great cook, but also because she never got tired of accepting insurance money for the annual window break from the boys baseball games outside.

Alice was also said by her sons to be the glue that held the family together not only in good times, but the hard times as well.

She never used profanity, and was also the Mother that lived by the old adage “If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Always busy, Alice found time to do for others. She never failed, every Memorial Day, to decorate all the graves of loved ones that had passed away.

Alice was also the biggest supporter of all the activities her sons were involved in, she was even the President of the Red and White Zebra Club. She could be found at numerous dances when the group her sons formed called “Sticky Fingers” was playing music. Alice loved the sound of “Grandma” and when the great grandchildren came along, “Gagaw” became music to her ears.

Alice was an avid collector and Beanie Babies were one of her favorite.

She also collected angels and this collection grew because of the great comfort they brought her personally after the passing of her husband Grant.

Garage sales were another pastime that not only helped her add to the already generous collection, but many times would start the next item on the growing list of collectibles.

This simple country girl who loved to paint her nails (usually red), wear a dress, fix her hair and put rings on every finger will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Alice is survived by her sons Grant Driver and wife Emily, Clarence Driver and wife Juana, and Gary Driver; grandchildren David Driver, Jeana Starbuck and husband Todd, Stephanie Driver, Jennifer Driver, Katie Driver, and Chelsea Mize and husband Matt; great grandchildren Lyric, Larry, Lindsey, Logan, Trinity, Titus and Rosie; sisters Lenora Space and husband Nova, Francis Davis and husband Dick, and brother Howard Grider.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Grant, and her sister and brother in law Helen and Troy Leming.

In lieu of flowers or other condolences, please consider sending a donation in Alice Driver’s name to American Kidney Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852.
