Wayne Coy Compton

CLAREMORE — Wayne Coy Compton was born Dec. 8, 1934 in Claremore, Okla. to James and Lovene (Sims) Compton, he was one of nine children. His family moved to California when he was in the first grade where he was reared and educated and attended college at Reedley College receiving his Associates Degree.

Wayne met Patricia Ann Smith in church and they were married on Jan. 14, 1957 at the Church of God in Orange Cove, Calif. Their union was blessed with three daughters. The family lived in California until 1977 when they moved to Claremore and Wayne began operating Wayne’s Auto Repair. He had on the job training with his dad and brother in California and was well prepared to operate his own business.

An athlete in his youth, Wayne played basketball in high school and college and also played in an exhibition game against the Harlem Globetrotters.

Because of his competitive nature, Wayne was scolded by his college coach for scoring too many points during the exhibition. Wayne enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf and flying. His love of flying inspired his grandson to become a pilot, and in fact, all of his grandchildren learned to love basketball and golf because of Wayne. He was proud that he taught each of them how to swim in the backyard pool.

A quiet, strong and hardworking man, Wayne was known by his family and coworkers for his honesty. A man of his word, Wayne was someone his friends and family could count on. One of his favorite things to do was travel with Pat. He loved their cruise and various trips, especially Hawaii and New Orleans. In recent years Wayne and Pat had organized family reunions to spend more time with their family.

This loving husband, father and grandfather will be missed by all who knew him. Wayne is survived by his wife of 56 years Pat; his children Debra Ann Kerr and husband Robert, and Sharri Lovene Compton; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; siblings Raymond and wife Janice, Mary, Bill and wife Esther, Ruby and husband Charley, Wanda and husband Mike, Gary and wife Nancy. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Jackie and Sue, daughter “Robbi” and husband Jim, and great grandson baby Parker.

The family would like to thank all the employees at Claremore Nursing Home and Grace Hospice for their care and dedication.
