Delbert “Joe” Nelson

CLAREMORE — Services for Delbert “Joe” Nelson will be 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Burial with Military honors will follow at Lone Elm Cemetery.

Joe passed away on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 with his family by his side. He was 84.

Born in Aldridge, Ala. on Dec. 11, 1928 to Jacob U. and Dessie V. (Burchfield) Nelson, Joe was reared and educated in Abernant, graduating from Abernant High School with the class of 1946. In 1947 Joe enlisted with the US Navy and served his country during the Korean Conflict.

During the time he was in the service he met a very interesting young lady while at the movies in Alabama. It was love at first sight and the two married on Aug. 19, 1950. They are now celebrating their 63rd anniversary together in heaven. The couple made St. Augustine, Florida home, where Joe was stationed. Following his honorable discharge, the couple moved back to Alabama for a time before moving to California in 1955, living in Lancaster in the same home for 52 years.

Joe was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 12 for 35 years, where he worked for Asphalt Construction. He was a heavy machine operator and helped with the construction of the AV Freeway in Area 51, paved the road for the space shuttle to Rosamond Dry Lake Bed and also the Black Bird Park in Palmdale.

In 2008 Joe and Lorraine moved to Tehachapi, CA to be near their daughter, Carol and her family and they resided there until their move to Claremore in 2010 to be near their daughter, Debbie and her family. Joe loved to spend time in the desert with his metal detector finding many treasures. He was quite happy taking a walk with his dog Fefe or reading a good book. He and Lorraine loved to travel and would visit their families in Alabama often. When it came to those grandchildren, Joe would make sure he was available to go to their sporting events.

A considerate and loving father, grandfather and friend, Joe would come to your rescue and give you the shirt off his back if needed, never considering himself. His loyalty to his wife and daughters was evident by the way he took care of them. He leaves many memories to those that survive. His beloved family includes his daughters Debbie Jo Warren and husband Larry of Claremore and Carol Montez and husband Mike of Tehachapi, Calif.; his grandchildren Lane Warren and wife Lesleigh, Donna Diebels and husband Paul, Dr. James Warren and wife Laura, Nancy Crow and husband Trent all of Claremore, Joshua Montez and wife Ashley of Tehachapi, Jacob Montez and wife Kady of Ventura, Calif. and Joseph Montez and wife Daniella of Phoenix, Ariz.; his 14 great-grandchildren; his sisters Ruth Durrett and Mavis Rogers both of Alabama. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lorraine, great grandson Jonathon Diebels and his brother Hubert Nelson.
