CLAREMORE — OPEN HOUSE

Verdigris United Methodist Church will host a “Welcome Home” open house from 4:30-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. They will serve free hot dogs, chips and drink. Activities are planned for children and older youth.

Meet the church family and new pastor, Rev. Mark Whitley.

‘MISSION POSSIBLE’

Good Samaritan Ministry will host “Mission Possible” at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at Faith Baptist Church. A love offering will be taken to benefit the ministry’s building relocation. Desserts and beverages will be served.

Special music will be provided by Sherri Robison and Debbie Kirkley, First Baptist of Claremore and First Baptist of Inola, respectively; Jennifer Holden, Memorial Heights Baptist; Ed McKinney, Faith Baptist; Amy Gilmore, First Baptist of Inola; and Nikki (Shomaker) Webster, Cedar Point.  For more information, call (918) 341-0581.

ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR

First Baptist Church of Verdigris will host the Amazing Grace Arts and Crafts Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 17 in the church community building. Crafts, baked goods, baby accessories, gently used decorator items and wall decor will be available. Admission is free.

SHRIMP PEEL

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will hold its annual Shrimp Peel from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 17. Menu includes all you can eat boiled shrimp, corn on the cob, potatoes, cole slaw, sherbet and iced tea. Tickets are $12 for adults, and $5 for children ages 7-12. Tickets are available at the church, (918) 341-0168, or by calling Gene West, (918) 343-0704, or Al Posner, (918) 341-3584. The church is located at 1310 N. Sioux.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY

Mt. Zion Baptist Church will celebrate the first anniversary of their pastor and wife, Rev. Bertheophilus and Arrica Bailey, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18. The church is located at 805 N. Oseuma Ave.

    Clad only in a pair of plaid pajama pants, he crossed the street and walked down the alley behind a row of businesses. I was startled. As I approached the parking lot near the courthouse, I crossed paths with several deputies. Taking in the scene before me, I realized the barefooted man, whose arms clutched a few belongings, had been a prisoner in the county jail. He had been set free.
