Local student named finalist for scholarship
A 2009 senior at Inola High School was named as a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist. Melody Davis was selected by the staff of Oklahoma American Legion Girls State which was held at Oklahoma University on May 25-31.Davis was sponsored to attend Oklahoma American Legion Girls State by the American Legion Post #141, in Claremore.
In making the announcement the selection officials said, Davis was named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist on the basis of academics, school and community involvement.
As a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist, Melody will join 99 other National Finalists from around the United States each competing for one of ten scholarships, each worth an expected $20,000.
Melody is active in several school organizations such as FCCLA, FCA, NHS, Select Choir, Varsity Volleyball, and Varsity Basketball. After high school she would like to complete her basics at Rogers State University and then pursue a degree in behavioral science at a Christian university.
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship funds come from the earnings of a $5 million endowment given by Samsung. Samsung, in recognition of the sacrifice and commitment of United States servicemen and women who served during the Korean War to maintain the security of the Korean peninsula, joined with The American Legion to offer an educational opportunity to the descendants of war-time veterans who have served honorably.
Davis is the granddaughter of William R. Melone who served with the Navy during the Korean War.
The president and chief executive officer of Samsung North America, Dong-Jin Oh, says Samsung wants to recognize “the sacrifices and commitment of U.S. servicemen and women. We believe this the best way to show our appreciation to the United States and to U.S. war veterans.”
