The Claremore High School academic team placed first Thursday at the 32nd annual Brain Bowl at Connors State College in Warner.
Fifteen area high school teams participated in the academic quiz, formatted as a double elimination tournament. Claremore beat out Coweta, Stigler, Morris, Muldrow and Hilldale to earn the win, qualifying the team for the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) in May in Rosemont, Ill.
The team competed against teams from across the US, Canada and China last year in the national tournament held in Chicago.
Head Coach Kay Strain said both the varsity and junior varsity teams advanced from the early rounds, and varsity made the quarterfinals, finishing among the best in the US.
She said the team will compete in the OSAA area tournament in January before competing for state in February. The varsity academic team has won three out of the last four state titles and have placed first or second at state for eight consecutive seasons, including a 6A state championship in 2011.
Strain said this year’s varsity team is somewhat different from past years because there are no senior members.
