What a year it has been for Claremore High School senior Bailey Wilton.
The National Merit finalist, 5-A state champion and straight-A student was selected as one of approximately 3,000 scholars nationwide to be honored as a candidate in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
Each year candidates are selected from nearly 3.5 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2013. To be included in the program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon high school seniors, according to the U.S. Department of Education Commission.
Scholars are selected based on superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, school activities and involvement in the community.
Wilton is a member of the CHS debate team, Young Democrats, Chemistry Club and Academic Team, who recently won the 5-A state championship. Nearly 550 semifinalists will be announced in early April. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars will then review the applications and select 121 academic scholars and 20 arts scholars. All scholars will be honored in June at a recognition ceremony in Washington D.C. for a several day event.
