SHAWNEE — Nerves may have played a factor in Oologah's 9-0 loss to Lone Grove in the first round of the Class 4A State Softball Championships Thursday at The Ballfields at Firelake in Shawnee.
Nerves can be the only explanation for the Mustangs (29-6) committing nine errors in the game.
It didn't help that the Mustangs had just one hit, a single by Kiah Purdunn in the bottom of the fourth inning. Even that turned out bad for Oologah, as that inning ended with a double play.
Lone Grove pitcher Emmy Guthrie was a Purdunn single away from a no-hitter. She struck out 12 with no walks. There was an error, so she face just 22 batters.
On the other side, Kenzie Chacon took the loss, and didn't get any help from the defense behind her. Of the nine runs scored on Chacon, only one was earned. She allowed nine hits and struck out five with two walks in 116 pitches.
Lone Grove left the bases loaded in the first, scored two in the second three in the third, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and three errors in the seventh allowed two more runs to score.
