VERDIGRIS — The Verdigris Cardinals cruised in their homecoming game 50-6 over the Nowata Ironmen Friday night.

Verdigris (2-2) opens District 3A-5 play next Friday with an All-Rogers County contest at Sequoyah. Nowata is 0-4.

Peyton Cox and Nathan Steidley both had three rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals.

Cox gained 110 yards on 12 carries while Steidley finished with 81 yards on eight carries.

Verdigris scored on the game's opening possession and needed just 87 seconds. Cox finished off the 5 play, 61 yard march with a 12-yard touchdown run.

Toby Willis then recovered the ensuing onside kick at the Nowata 47 yard line.

Steidley punched it in three plays later on a 1-yard keeper at the 9:42 mark of the first quarter.

Steidley scored on another 1-yard run with 6:34 left in the first period. That touchdown came three plays after Hayden Hutchinson blocked a punt, giving the Cards the ball at the Ironmen 14 yard line.

The Verdigris defense then got a score 51 seconds later, courtesy of a 42-yard fumble return from Dalton Hight.

Steidley then had a thrilling 64-yard touchdown run on a third-and-20 play with 1:31 left in the first quarter.

Steidley was flushed to his right, but then cut back all the way to the left sideline, eluding several would be tacklers on his way to the end zone.

Cox scored a pair of touchdowns in the second period. The first one came 94 seconds into the frame from five yards out. The other one was an 11-yard gallop at the 7:20 mark.

The second half was played with a continuous clock. Nowata got on the board with about eight minutes left, courtesy of an 80-yard touchdown run from Bryce Hewitt.
