SPERRY — Chelsea captured not one, but two Class 3A high school basketball district championships Friday night.

In the boys game, the Dragons started quickly, and finished just as quickly, to polish off Sperry, 61-54.

In the girls game, Chelsea overcame a slow beginning and used a third-quarter outburst to slip past the Lady Pirates, 48-44.

The victories earned both Chelsea teams the right to advance to the regional tournament level — at home Thursday night.

Chelsea’s boys and girls will await the survivor of a Saturday night district matchup between Haskell and Kansas.

Chelsea, which won only one game last season, posted its fourth Friday night, but it was the biggest win in a couple of seasons.

Ryan Terry and Eric Paul combined for 40 points to carry the Dragons.

They jumped in front, 20-6, in the first quarter, and even though they fell behind after three periods, the Dragons responded in the fourth.

Outscoring the Pirates, 20-12, in the final quarter, Chelsea gave first-year coach James Fleming a district championship.

Early in the season, Sperry defeated Chelsea, 61-59.

The Lady Dragons

Chelsea, winners of only four games a year ago, won its 10th in the district championship game.

Kasha Kolb, Sierra McSpadden and Bree Winters combined for 37 points in a balanced Chelsea attack that reversed an earlier 65-46 loss to Sperry.

Sperry broke out to a 16-6 first-quarter advantage, and held a 27-25 halftime lead.

But in the third quarter, Chelsea put the defensive clamps on the Lady Pirates.

Sperry was limited to four points in the period, and could not catch the determined Lady Dragons when it mattered.

Chelsea improved its record to 10-11.

Chassity Torix scored 23 and Lacey Ginn threw in 16 for Sperry, now 9-13.
