It was a steamy night out at Legion Field Monday.
And Sand Springs turned up the heat even more.
Sand Springs, filling in for an absent Sperry squad, got hot late in the game, scoring four times in the fifth inning, and burned Claremore Red, 7-4, in a Diamond League game.
Claremore was in control for a while, building a 3-0 lead over the first three innings.
Hunter Hines held Sand Springs in check, not giving up his first hit until the fourth inning. That lone hit produced a run, though, and opened the door for even more offense an inning later.
Sand Springs put together four runs in the fifth to grab the lead.
Shane Bacon took control from there, settling down and holding Claremore in check over the next three innings.
After his teammates gave him the lead, and added two more runs in the sixth, Bacon shut out Claremore and yielded only one hit the rest of the way.
Bacon finished with seven strikeouts, and scattered five hits.
Claremore threatened Bacon in the sixth when Christian Kays led off with a walk. But with each batter representing the tying run, Claremore Red was unable to solve Bacon, and Kays was left stranded when the last hitter lined out.
Claremore resumes its schedule on Thursday. Claremore White will play Bixby JV at 6 p.m., at Legion Field, followed by Claremore Red and Coweta at 8 p.m.
