Claremore’s state champion runner Clay Mayes III returned home recently with the distinction of being an All-American runner.

Mayes, a spring graduate of Sequoyah High School, competed in the 2006 Nike Outdoor Nationals at Greensboro, N.C., as a member of the Jenks America Track Club.

In his 5,000-meter specialty, Mayes finished sixth and was awarded All-American status.

The top six placers in each event of the three-day track spectacular which attracted some 2,000 high school athletes earned All-American recognition.

Ben Massam of Chatham, N.J., won the 5,000 with a time of 14:48.73.

Two-time Oklahoma Class 6A champion in the 2-mile, Kevin Schwab, of Mustang, also running with the Jenks club, placed second with a time of 15:00.56.

Mayes, who won the Class 4A state championship in the 2-mile this spring, ran sixth with a time of 15:12.07. He was two seconds ahead of the seventh-place finisher.
