Muskogee — The Catoosa Indians gave the Hilldale Hornets a tough fight but in the end, the Hornets proved to be too much to handle as they defeated Catoosa 37-14 in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Hilldale’s Mikey Winston registered 192 yards on 26 carries and four touchdowns en route to the victory.
The Hornets drew first blood with a 16-yard scoring run by Winston, giving the Hornets a 7-0 lead with 7:08 left in the opening quarter.
On the following series, Catoosa quarterback Daniel Queen tied the game back up with a 58-yard run up the middle untouched, knotting the game up at 7-7.
The Catoosa (7-4) defense held the Hornets on their next possession, forcing Peyton Bennett to kick a 30-yard field goal. The Hornets took a 10-7 lead with :27 left in the first quarter.
As the game was nearing halftime, Queen struck again, this time rumbling nine yards to the score. Catoosa took a 14-10 lead into halftime.
Hilldale (10-1) came out of halftime with the intentions of putting the game away and that is just what they did. Winston scored three touchdowns on the Hornets’ first three possessions of the second half, runs of one, six, and seven yards.
Meanwhile, the Hilldale defense forced the Indians to punt on their first three posessions.
Hilldale capped off the victory with a 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jaron Nail to Alex Puckett with 2:05 left in the game.
