Sapulpa had a good season opener last week, beating Tulsa Edison handily, 34-13.

And it didn't take long for the Chieftains to get the ball rolling, either. On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Elijah Williams threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Te'zohn Taft.

Usually a running team, Sapulpa used that pass to open things up. They only threw four times all night. They used their workhorse running backs, A.J. Checotah and Marcus Esparza, for 22 combined carries for 125 yards.

Claremore now gets its shot at Sapulpa when the Zebras travel across Tulsa to Collins Stadium Friday night.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Claremore didn't have as much success in its opener, however. The Zebras took an early lead on a 37-yard swing pass from quarterback Charlie Murdock to Jake Gilmore, but then gave up 21 unanswered points in a 21-14 loss to Bartlesville.

Claremore cut the lead to 21-14 after a 15-yard pass from Murdock to Quentin Skinner with 19.6 seconds left, and had a good shot at an onside kick, but the Bruins recovered and held on for the win.

The defense had some big stops for Claremore, gaining two interceptions, but gave up a big pass play which gave the Bruins the lead for good.
