WACO, Texas – Four Hillcats from Rogers State men's soccer were named to the All-Heartland Men's Soccer Team as announced by the Heartland Conference on Thursday (Nov. 2). Senior Declan Fitzpatrick, sophomore Jordan Watson and juniors Jake Simpson and Ellis Ashworth earned all-conference third team honors.
Fitzpatrick, a senior form Falkirk, Scotland, started in 16 of the 18 contests this season in the midfield. He totaled a season-high four assists and added two goals for eight points. The senior tallied his first goal in the navy and red against Southwest Baptist on Sept. 10 in a 4-0 victory. Fitzpatrick totaled three points with a goal and an assist on Senior Day as the Hillcats won 3-1 over Newman on Oct. 28. For the season, Fitzpatrick played 1,293 minutes and ranked third on the team with 28 shots and 12 shots on goal.
Simpson, a junior from Cambridge England, appeared in 14 games and made 13 starts as a forward for the Hillcat offensive attack. For the season straight season, Simpson led the Hillcats in goals and points. In his junior season, he posted a team-high five goals for 10 points. The junior totaled two goals, including the game-winning tally in a 3-0 win over Oklahoma Christian on Oct. 26. Playing in 1,070 minutes, Simpson paced the Cats with 43 shots and 21 shots on goal. It's Simpson's second All-Heartland Conference honor after being named All-Heartland First team in 2016.
Ashworth, a junior from Brentwood, England, started in 17 of the 18 games this season on the RSU defense. He played the second most minute on the team at 1,548 minutes in those 17 games. A key part of the Hillcat back line, he helped the navy and red post six shutouts. The defense held opponents to only 1.2 goals per game.
Watson, a sophomore from London, England, appeared in 17 of the 18 contests with 16 starts in the midfield and on defense. The sophomore topped the Hillcats with two game-winning goals. Watson tallied the game winner in a comeback 3-2 win over UT Permian Basin on Sept. 16. His second game-winning tally came on Senior Day in a 3-1 victory over Newman on Oct. 28. The London, England product ranked second on the team with three goals and eight points. In 1,266 minutes, Watson registered 30 shots and 10 shots on goal, ranking second and third, respectively, in those categories.
The Hillcats went 8-7-3 on the season, their ninth winning season in the 11 seasons of RSU men's soccer.
