The Foyil Panthers broke out early and quickly Tuesday night and rolled over St. Paul, Kansas, 60-32, in the Kenneth Sooter Invitational high school basketball tournament at Welch.

The Panthers posted a 23-4 advantage after the first quarter, and then coasted, much to the chagrin of head coach Jason Ward.

“We came out really hot, but then we didn’t play very well the rest of the way,” he said.

Jason Kersey scored 14 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for Foyil, now 2-0. Eric Murray had 11 assists to go with his eight points, and Taylor Antle led all scorers with 15.

The Foyil girls fell to St. Paul, Kansas, 40-9, in the same tournament.

The Foyil boys return to play Chetopa, Kan., at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

In the Adair tournament, Chelsea defeated Kellyville, 44-40, but the Kellyville girls clipped the Lady Dragons, 56-49.

“After we fell behind in the first quarter, 23-14, it was an uphill battle after that,” Chelsea coach Charlie Hadley said.

Still, Chelsea cut an 11-point deficit with four minutes to go to two with 39 seconds left.

But, a turnover followed, and Chelsea had to foul to regain possession.

The comeback, Hadley said, “was a big effort on our part.”
