CHELSEA — The Chelsea basketball team hosted the season opener Friday and played rude hosts as they took two game from neighbor and rival Foyil Friday.
The Lady Dragons won 55-25, while the Chelsea boys prevailed 46-28.
Chelsea girls 55, Foyil 25 — An 8-0 run kickstarted the season for the Chelsea girls basketball team, as they set the tone early in a 55-25 win over visiting Foyil Friday night.
Kenzie Dick and Sadie Jordan roamed the paint for the Lady Dragons, while Anna Wolf was the sharpshooter from beyond the arc with three treys. The green trio got the home team out to a double-digit lead, but Foyil managed to cut the lead to single digits before halftime, only to see the Green Dragons edge balloon to 26-16 at the half. That was as close as it would get.
Foyil just couldn’t get past the tenacious full court press and aggressive defense by Chelsea, and scored just nine second half points. Foyil was led by Morgan Valliere and Brentnei Barbee each with 6 points.
Meanwhile, Chelsea had enough offense to spread around. Dick led the way with 18 points. Jordan and Wolf each added 11. Katelyn Thurman added 9 for Chelsea.
Chelsea boys 46, Foyil 28 — Last year, it took the Chelsea boys basketball team 23 games to get its first win.
This year, it took just one.
Friday, in the season and home opener, the Green Dragons pulled away midway through the first quarter and never looked back in a 46-28 win.
Chelsea went 0-22 in the regular season last year, but starts out 1-0 this season thanks to forcing Foyil into turnovers and making the most of second chance opportunities.
Foyil managed just five points in each of the first two quarters and trailed 24-10 at the break. The Green Dragons were able to keep the Panthers at arm’s length the rest of the way.
Noah Winters led Chelsea with 12 points, Will Haley had 120, Austin Veysey scored 8 and Ryan Theall had 7.
But the time the Foyil offense got going, it was too big a hole to dig out of. Mason Vasquez led the Panthers with 10 points. Gus Spence knocked down 8.
Both teams are now off until after Thanksgiving.
The Dragons play at Caney Valley on Dec. 1 before the Nowata tournament Dec. 4-9. Foyil plays at Oaks Mission on Nov. 28 before hosting Afton Dec. 1.
