ADA, Okla. – For the second straight season, the Rogers State women's soccer team moved to 2-0 early in the season as the Cats rolled to a 2-0 victory at East Central on Saturday (Sept. 2) at Tiger Stadium.
The Hillcats scored goals nearly 10 minutes apart on either side of the halftime intermission to pull away for the win. Junior Madison Murray tallied the game-winning goal, her first goal in the navy and red uniform, in the 44th minute right before halftime. The junior knocked in a corner kick with both Abigail Resendiz and Eva Madarang earning assists on the goal.
Melissa Cardenas added the second goal in the early part of the second half. She took a free kick from just outside the top of the box and fired a strike by the ECU goalkeeper in the 53rd minute for the 2-0 advantage.
The Cats were just as dominant today as they were in the season-opening win on Thursday. RSU held a massive advantage in shots with 29 in the game, while holding the Tigers to seven, including only two on target. The first half saw the navy and red control possession and pressure the Tigers with 19 shots. In the second half, RSU continued to dictate the game with 10 shots to only three from the home team. ECU was forced to make five saves just in the opening 45 minutes and totaled seven in the game, while allowing the two goals.
Taylor Sargent had her second clean sheet in two games in goal this season. She made two saves in 90 minutes of action to move to 2-0 on the season.
The Hillcats return home to start Heartland Conference play on Thursday (Sept. 7) against Newman. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with coverage available on the Hillcat Network.
