CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State men's soccer team ended the 2017 season with a 3-1 victory over a short-handed Newman team on Saturday (Oct. 28) at Soldier Field in the final game for five Hillcat seniors.
RSU concluded the season with an 8-7-3 record and 5-6-3 in the Heartland Conference. At Soldier Field the Cats went 6-1-1 this season.
Cody Gammill, Walker Farrar, Declan Fitzpatrick, Riggie Gonzalez and Roman Gutierrez all made their final appearances in the navy and red. The five seniors were honored following the win.
After a red card on Newman's starting goalkeeper Chase Bowman, RSU scored on the following free kick for a 1-0 lead with 50 seconds left in the first half.
Fitzpatrick tallied the goal with a low strike under the Newman wall and to the left lower corner of the goal.
Sophomore Jordan Watson upped the Hillcat advantage to 2-0 early in the second half. He charged into the box and went near post on a shot from a tight angle on the right side of the goal in the 53rd minute.
Abe Young added the final RSU tally with a goal in the 71st minute on a shot to the far post for a 3-0 score.
Newman's Francklin Dallien prevented the shutout with a goal in the 77th minute for the 3-1 final margin.
The Hillcats controlled play throughout the majority of the contest, doubling up Newman in shots, 16-8. RSU held a slight 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
The Jets played with a man advantage for about 10 minutes after a red card on RSU's Kevin Kwarteng. The final 46 minutes saw 10 on 10 action after the red card on Newman late in the first period.
Gammill earned the start in goal going the first 45 minutes. He made three saves. Farrar went the final 45 minutes and totaled two saves while allowing the one goal.
The Hillcats finished the season with an 8-7-3 record on the season, their ninth winning season in the 11 years of RSU men's soccer.
