Rogers State’s Hillcats, fresh from a Saturday victory at the Claremore Expo Center, moved up to No. 2 Monday in the NAIA national basketball coaches’ poll.

The Hillcats, who defeated Mid-America University, 89-62, advanced from No. 3 to the runnerup spot behind Westminster (Utah). It is the highest national ranking ever for any Rogers State athletic program.

The Hillcats received two first place votes, seven fewer than Westminster, which accumulated 310 total votes. The Hillcats drew 300 votes.

RSU, which suffered its only loss on the road to Oklahoma Baptist 10 days ago, stands at 15-1 and leads the Sooner Athletic Conference. OBU moved up from No. 7 to No. 5 in the poll. Oklahoma Christian returned to the poll, at No. 21, replacing defending national champion Oklahoma City. The Hillcats knocked OCU out of the rankings with a 78-67 win last week.

Westminster is the fifth team to draw the No. 1 position this season. Westminster and No. 3 Georgetown (Ky.) lead the country in wins with 18 each.

On Saturday, RSU went on a 25-0 run late in the second half to dispatch Mid-America. The Hillcats had a 41-39 halftime lead and fell behind in the first four minutes of the second half.

Then, with the season’s most impressive spurt, they roared ahead and crushed the Evangels.

Five Hillcats scored in double figures, including Roderick Rodgers who had his third double-double of the season (11 points, 10 rebounds).

The RSU women made it a sweep, handing Mid-America an 83-75 defeat.

Hillcat Azzie Knox scored 17 points and harvested 19 rebounds while setting a school record with five blocked shots.

RSU led by 22 in the first half and by 15 at intermission.

The Evangels however, opened the second half on a 15-3 run and pulled with 64-62 with 7:28 to play.

RSU scored 10 of the next 12 points to register its 12th victory against four losses.
