INOLA — Inola welcomed the Chelsea Green Dragons into their home, but sent them away with two high school basketball losses Tuesday night.

With the Longhorns back at full strength, they topped the Dragons, 65-49, depspite Eric Paul’s 29 points.

The Lady Longhorns dominated their game, 64-32. Senior standout Mandy Grigg hit six three-pointers on her way to leading the Lady Longhorns in scoring with 20 points.

The Lady Longhorns made short work of the Lady Dragons, thanks to Mandy Grigg.

Nine girls scored, but it was the 5-4 Mandy Grigg who lit up the Dragons.

“We’ve been having her shoot more in practice,” Inola coach Rick Ott said. “It was just a matter of time before it paid off.”

Mandy and twin sister Mary are a force on both ends of the court.

Sophomore Bailey Gins came off the bench to score 13 and freshman Candace Maldonaldo added in nine.

Ott said their play Tuesday night will help as the season progresses.

Inola improved to 5-4. Chelsea is 6-5.

Leading by eight at half, the Longhorns regrouped and played a fast-paced game to defeat the Green Dragons.

Outstanding play and 29 points from senior guard Eric Paul just weren’t enough to keep the Dragons in the game.

“We are getting there. It is tough when you only win one game last season, but we already have two and have high expectations,” said first-year Dragon coach Jay Fleming.

Senior Matt Wheeler led the Longhorns with 16.

Inola broke away in the fourth, scoring 21 points — the most points in any quarter. Three Longhorns off the bench hit from beyond the three-point arc, and a dozen players in all scored as Inola won its third game against five losses.

“It was great to get all those kids in the game,” Inola coach Clyde Barkley said. “We are back to being healthy and eligible, and that makes us quicker.”

Turnovers have cost the Longhorns all season. Assistant coach Jeff Unrau said they had been averaging 25 a game. Both coaches agree that cutting down on turnovers is a key to success for the Longhorns.
