Cassidy Bowen hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, came through with a two-run single in the sixth and picked off the potential tying run in the seventh as Claremore squeezed past Coweta, 3-2, Friday in Metro Lakes Conference softball.
For the Lady Zebras, 2-0, it was their home opener.
Keeli Garroutte spread out six hits and earned her second victory.
Bowen’s catch of a foul popup just inches from the backstop allowed Garroutte to escape serious trouble in the fourth. It came with one out and runners at second and third. After the catch, Garroutte forced the next batter to ground out to second baseman Brooke Hudson.
Sami Garroutte and Julie Rigsby were on base with singles to set up Bowen's game-winning hit in the sixth.
Coweta scored in the first following a lead-off triple against Keeli Garroutte. After Bowen’s homer tied it in the fourth, Candace Kellar put Coweta back in front with a sixth-inning single.
Bowen broke that tie in the home sixth, giving Claremore the lead for the first time.
Garroutte wasted no time in the seventh, retiring the first two batters. Brittany Cooper, ninth in the batting order, gave the Coweta fans fresh hope with a single. She was replaced by pinch runner Lizzy Hughes.
Capping an already impressive performance, Bowen promptly picked Hughes off first base with a rifle throw to Whitney Hocutt.
