Verdigris, Sequoyah out at state

OKLAHOMA CITY — Top-ranked Lone Grove defeated Claremore Sequoyah, 2-0, and Tahlequah took out Verdigris, 2-1, in the opening round of the high school girls fastpitch softball state tournaments at Hall of Fame Stadium.

Lone Grove put together a pair of runs in the sixth inning and eliminated Claremore Sequoyah from the Class 4A field.

It was Tahlequah Sequoyah that put an end to the Verdigris season with a 2-1 decision in the Class 3A tournament. Sequoyah scored a run in the fifth to decide the game.

Tahlequah Sequoyah entered the tournament as the No. 2 ranked team in Class 3A. Courtney Glass limited Verdigris to two hits as the Indians advanced to today’s semifinals against Adair, a 5-2 winner over Little Axe. Glass struck out five.

The Indians scored first, in the second inning, but Verdigris rallied in the bottom half, thanks to an error. Lauren Davey reached on an infield miscue and later scored on a fielder’s choice by T.K. Worley.

It remained that way until the fifth when a double and Saharra’s Henson’s plated the winning run.

Verdigris, No. 7 in the OKrankings coaches’ poll to close the season, finished with a 29-8 record. Tahlequah Sequoyah moves on with a 31-5 record.

Lone Grove, the 2004 state champion, held Claremore Sequoyah in check until it could break through in the bottom of the sixth.

Lone Grove takes a 36-3 record into today’s semifinals against Tuttle.

Claremore Sequoyah finished its season at 21-9. The Lady Eagles were No. 15 in the final coaches’ poll.
