Verdigris wins first of season

Daron Wright

Sports Sunday Correspondent

VERDIGRIS — Homecoming festivities were in full swing Friday night as the Verdigris Cardinals battled the Chelsea Green Dragons. And the Cardinals provided all the fireworks.

The Cardinals’ offense exploded early with three touchdowns in the first 10 minutes and they rolled to a 41-7 District 2A-7 high school football victory.

It was the Cardinals’ first win of the season.

Verdigris relied heavily on the throwing, rushing and defensive talents of quarterback Kevin Stout.

Of the Cardinals’ 441 yards of offense, the junior accounted for 313, plus three touchdowns.

Defensively, Stout picked off an interception late in the fourth quarter.

Senior David Bachmeier rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore Kyle Parnell gained 112 yards in receptions with two of his five catches going for touchdowns.

In the opening minutes of the game, Devin Bachmeier capped a four-play, 60-yard drive with a 6-yard TD. Stout added a 1-yard scoring run of his own before throwing 20 yards to Parnell for another.

The Homecoming crowd had just began to settle in by the time the score had reached 20-0.

Bachmeier scored again in the second period and the Cardinals took a 27-0 lead into intermission.

In the fourth, Stout connected with Parnell on a 70-yard scoring throw and Daniel Burke pushed over from the 1 for a TD.

The Green Dragons’ lone score came in the fourth quarter when Chris Heath ran 25 yards.
