OOLOGAH — Oologah locked in its District 4A-3 high school football playoff spot Friday night, defeating the Jay Bulldogs, 41-0.
With the win came the fourth-place finish in their district, and the Mustangs earned the right to take on District 4A-4 champion Broken Bow, 7-3 and No. 6-ranked in the state, Friday night in Broken Bow.
Within the first four minutes of the game, the Mustangs served Jay a three and out and ran three plays for their first score.
Brett Swindell broke off a 71-yard run to start the Mustangs rolling. After an interception by senior Aaron Stoops, Swindell found the end zone for the second time in three minutes on a three-yard rush.
Swindell led the Mustangs with 88 yards on seven carries. Six other players ran the ball for a total of 236 total rushing yards.
“We aren’t a bad football team when we don’t turn over the ball and keep our heads on defense like we did tonight,” Oologah coach Sonny Schovanek said.
Defensively, the Mustangs held the Bulldogs to an average of 2.6 yards per carry and only 132 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs’ leading rusher, Kyle Kirby, managed 110 of those yards on 28 carries.
Mustang quarterback Jordan Barrett completed four of eight passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored from the two after a 12-play drive in the third quarter.
As the third quarter ran down, the Bulldogs were on the march. Starting the fourth quarter, they continued their longest drive of the game only to be halted at the 19. Senior defensive back Marty Price intercepted an errant pass and returned it 81 yards for the final score of the game.
Oologah will take a 5-5 record into the playoffs.
In the dressing room Friday night, Schovanec said: “We really like this team. They are young and getting better every week. We are excited to go play somebody new and we aren’t just happy to go to the playoffs. We want to win.”
