CLAREMORE, Okla. – Senior midfielder Eva Madarang netted the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to lift the Rogers State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Friday (Aug. 31) at Soldier Field.

After the Rangers totaled the equalizer in the 81st minute, the navy and red wasted no time to regain the lead with the Madarang goal in the 84th minute, her first goal in her two-year RSU career. The senior fired a hard shot directly at the goal, but the ball was deflected by a NWOSU defender and sailed over the goalkeeper's head for the game winner.

Sophomore Maggie Brown opened the game's scoring as she knocked in a shot after a through ball from sophomore Hannah Mushisky as the Cats went up 1-0 in the 63rd minute.

The contest, which was originally scheduled for Thursday in Alva, was a one-sided affair as the Hillcats controlled possession throughout the 90 minutes. However, it took until the second half for the Cats to break through. RSU had its share of opportunities to add more goals, but could only convert twice.

NWOSU took advantage of one of its very few chances to tie the score at 1-1 in the 81st minute. Yazmin Gomez scored for the Rangers to even the contest.

For the game, the Hillcats held a 15-3 advantage in shots, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Madarang and BreAnn Tolleson led the team with three shots each.

Senior goalkeeper Taylor Sargent earned the win in goal, going the full 90 minutes. She made one save.

The victory was the first collegiate win for first-year head coach Yolanda Thomas.

For the second straight season, the Hillcats defeated the Rangers in the home season opener. Exactly one year ago, RSU won 3-0 on Aug. 31, 2017 over NWOSU to begin 2017. The navy and red have won three-straight season openers.

The Hillcats continue the 2018 campaign against Rockhurst on Tuesday (Sept. 4) in the second of three straight home contests to open the season. Start time is set for 6 p.m. with live stats and video streaming available on the Hillcat Network.
