OKLAHOMA CITY — It was destined to be. The No. 1 and No. 2 seed at No. 2 doubles met in the finals of the Class 5A State Boys Tennis Championships Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Claremore's second seed, Owen McElwain and James Stout, faced the top seeded duo from Heritage Hall. But a 6-2, 6-2 loss ended the season with a runner-up spot.

The Zebra pair scratched and clawed its way to the finals. They cruised by Christian Heritage 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round Friday, and then after losing the first set 6-2 to Bishop Kelley, rallied for a 7-5, 6-4 final two sets to get into the semifinals.

On Saturday, they faced Cascia Hall for another hand-wringer. They lost 6-4 in the opening set, but won 7-5 in the each of the final two to make the championship match.

The other doubles team of James Cagle and Ryan Westfall were knocked out of the championship bracket with a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Bishop Kelley in the semifinals, and then fell to Riverfield 6-2, 6-2 to finish fourth.

Micah Sloan and Jacob Price each won one match in singles play.

As a team, Claremore finished in fifth place.
