WICHITA Falls, Texas – Midwestern State scored a game-winning overtime golden goal to down the Rogers State men's soccer team, 2-1, on Thursday night (Sept. 21) at Stang Park for the Hillcats' first Heartland Conference loss of the season.
In a matchup of two of the top teams in the Heartland Conference, the Mustangs (7-0, 3-0 Heartland Conference) tallied the game winner in the fifth minute of overtime to earn the 2-1 victory. A cross into the box was sent into the back of the net by Scott Doney for the game-winning golden goal.
The goal was Doney's second in the game as he put the host Mustangs in front 1-0 in the 24th minute on a header off a free kick from about 35 yards.
Although the visiting Hillcats held a 9-4 edge in shots in the first half, MSU took the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
In the second half, RSU pulled even at 1-1 due to an own goal by the Mustang defense. The own goal came in the 54th minute to tie the score. The tally was the only goal of the second half as regulation ended knotted at 1-1.
The Cats finished with a slight 16-14 edge in shots; however, the Mustangs put eight shots on target to only three on target for RSU. Jordan Watson registered a game-high four shots, including one on goal. Jake Simpson added three shots for the navy and red.
Senior goalkeeper Cody Gammill went the full 95 minutes, totaling six saves. The defeat was his first of the season in goal as he dropped to 4-1 in his five starts on the year.
The Hillcats (6-2, 2-1 Heartland Conference) travel to in-state rival Oklahoma Christian (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday (Sept. 23) for a 1 p.m. contest in Oklahoma City, Okla. Live stats will be available for the game.
